The Number I Wrote Down Was Not Evidence

I had a test count I trusted. It was 245. Another method returned 269. I explained the larger number away. The text counter must have overcounted parameterized tests, I wrote. Then I opened the result bundle. It reported 269 distinct test identifiers. Forty-one of those nodes carried parameter arguments. The bundle…

A Year-Old AlarmKit Beta Report Became a Product Constraint

An AlarmKit evaluation found two apparent limits: custom audio could play for only 30 seconds, and it would play once. Those limits mattered. A wake-up sound that stops politely after one short clip is not much of an alarm (it is closer to a notification with ambition). So the product discussion started bending around…

The Phone Was Not My Test Rig. It Was Already in Use

I was already using my phone for development when an automated session prepared another iOS performance run against it. A screenshot exposed the collision before the second run took control. That should have ended the attempt. The automation also sent a mouse click intended for the app. It landed on a different window…

Create the AsyncStream Before the Producer Can Publish

I had a StoreKit listener. I had an AsyncStream. I had a SwiftUI .task consuming that stream. I also had a transaction result that vanished between all three. Nothing crashed. No continuation threw an error. The purchase was settled. The stream consumer was about to begin. It was just not there yet. That last word did…

A Resolved Promise Is Not a Shown Dialog: Designing Honest In-App Review Flows

I like promises because they look decisive. They either resolve or reject. We await them, and for a brief moment JavaScript feels like a world with rules. Then I worked through the contract of in-app review prompts. On both Android and iOS, requestReview() can resolve even when the user never saw a review dialog. The…

The Best OCR Fix Was Deleting Code: Lessons from a React Native Receipt Scanner

Receipts are the most hostile documents in consumer computing. They're printed on thermal paper that fades in a glovebox, crumpled before they leave the store, photographed at 11 PM under a single kitchen bulb, and shaped like nothing else your image pipeline has met — a "tall" receipt can push past a 20:1 aspect…

iOS 26 Finally Fixed Alarm Apps. Android Still Makes You Earn It.

I've been building a wake-up alarm app as a side project — a Flutter app whose whole premise is waking you with a voice message you (or someone who tolerates you) recorded. The one non-negotiable contract: the alarm sound fires at the scheduled time even if the app was never launched. If you've never built an alarm…

Sharing SwiftData With an iOS Widget: I Researched Both Options, Picked the Safe One, Then Needed Both

I've been building QuestKeeper, a small native iOS side project: a gamified to-do app where every task is a monster in a dungeon and missing a deadline kills your pixel hero. (Yes, I now do the dishes to keep a fictional character alive. It works disturbingly well.) Naturally, it needed a Home Screen widget — the…
