A Node Patch Upgrade Should Not Make Your Global Tools Disappear

You upgrade Node through nvm, switch to the newest patch, and discover that the global CLI you used five minutes ago is gone. Nothing is technically broken. Each Node installation has its own global package directory. Your packages are still sitting under the previous patch version, perfectly safe and perfectly…

The Patch Was Small. The Package Manager Was the Architecture

A build watcher kept following tool directories and rebuilding a Figma plugin for changes that had nothing to do with the plugin. The dependency needed a tiny patch: ignore .trunk, .remember, and .claude. The interesting decision was not how to write that diff. It was how to make the repository's existing package…

A Rendered Line Is Not Delivered Until write() Completes

My renderer produced the right line. My CLI tried to write it. The output stream rejected it. Then the next state report arrived, the renderer produced the same line again, and the CLI skipped it as a duplicate. Nothing had been duplicated. The line had never made it out. This is the small, unpleasant gap between…

A 202 Accepted Is Not Zero Contributors

One number on my GitHub profile card kept lying with excellent typography. Lines of code changed sometimes dropped to zero or came out suspiciously small. The failure mode was quiet: unavailable data could become a numeric zero inside an otherwise complete-looking SVG. Nothing in the card's shape explained why the…

Your Subprocess Timeout Fires On Time and Your Program Still Hangs

I set a 30-second timeout. The run took 120 seconds. The timeout was working perfectly. I write a small Prettier plugin that formats Dart code blocks inside Markdown. It does almost nothing on its own — it hands each block to the dart format binary you already have installed and puts the result back. A thin wrapper…

nvm Keeps Eating My Global Packages: Building node-snapshot to Get Them Back

If you use nvm and you install your CLI tools globally, you have probably lived this moment: you bump Node to the latest patch, open a fresh terminal, type tsc (or eslint, or yarn, or whatever you live inside), and the shell just… shrugs. It was there yesterday. You didn't uninstall anything. But nvm doesn't carry…
