Three React Native Tools for the Work That Happens Before Runtime

React Native gets blamed for plenty of runtime problems. Some of the most expensive problems happen earlier. An image path survives review and fails on the device. A dependency migration begins before anyone knows which native modules need attention. A Figma selection becomes component code only after someone manually…

React Native Is New-Architecture-Only. Gradle Still Packed Someone Else's Code

The Android build failed with a message that was both precise and deeply unhelpful: The library I was validating did not implement a safe-area view. It did not declare react-native-safe-area-context. It did not even expose a Codegen surface. Yet its AAR contained RNCSafeAreaProviderManagerDelegate. Apparently Gradle…

If the OS Will Not Confirm It, Your Analytics Should Not Either

Complete-sounding event names are tempting when an API returns a resolved promise. review_prompt_shown. review_completed. user_rated_app. They make dashboards wonderfully decisive. They can also describe events the application never observed. In-app review is a sharp example. An application may request the system…

    Native Modules Live at Runtime

A native module can compile perfectly and still be unable to do its job. That is not a contradiction. The module may need a foreground Android Activity to open a system-owned surface. The application may declare a framework feature in its build settings while the running process never activates it. Both failures are…

A Resolved Promise Is Not a Shown Dialog: Designing Honest In-App Review Flows

I like promises because they look decisive. They either resolve or reject. We await them, and for a brief moment JavaScript feels like a world with rules. Then I worked through the contract of in-app review prompts. On both Android and iOS, requestReview() can resolve even when the user never saw a review dialog. The…

One Constructor Argument, Two Incompatible Contracts: NativeEventEmitter Across the React Native Bridge Divide

There is a specific kind of bug that only exists during a migration, and it has a signature: two things are individually correct, and you cannot have both. NativeEventEmitter in React Native is one of those. Pass its constructor a native module and the New Architecture complains at you forever. Omit the argument and…

Your Build Says Fabric. Ask the Runtime.

A green build is a configuration fact. Fabric being live is a runtime fact. They are not the same claim. There is a specific flavour of wasted afternoon where you flip newArchEnabled=true, the build goes green, the app launches, and you spend the next two hours debugging a Fabric-only behaviour in an app that is…

The Best OCR Fix Was Deleting Code: Lessons from a React Native Receipt Scanner

Receipts are the most hostile documents in consumer computing. They're printed on thermal paper that fades in a glovebox, crumpled before they leave the store, photographed at 11 PM under a single kitchen bulb, and shaped like nothing else your image pipeline has met — a "tall" receipt can push past a 20:1 aspect…
