After Editing zsh History, Check the Running Shell Too

You edit a command in the history file, inspect the saved text, and find the old command still listed by the open terminal. Checking the file again will not explain that mismatch: zsh also keeps an in-memory history list. Before trusting a history-editing tool, check what the running shell lists after the edit and…

Codex Can Generate Images. I Wanted a Contact Sheet.

Generating one image with Codex is fine. Generating five candidates, comparing them, finding the prompt that produced the good one, attaching a reference, re-rolling, and saving the winner is where the workflow starts shedding parts. The image tool runs inside an agent turn. There is no standalone imagegen command to…

    Your Repositories Need an Inbox

Once you maintain enough repositories, the problem is no longer opening one project. The problem is deciding which project deserves attention today. One repository has an open pull request. Another has Dependabot alerts. A third has commits on its default branch that never became a release. Two exist on GitHub but are…

The Watcher Polled the First Page Forever

A watcher can run every few minutes. Every request can succeed. The JSON can parse. The count can stay the same. The report can still say there is nothing new. There may be one small problem. The watcher may have been asking the API for the first page forever. The current gh api help is explicit about pagination.…

A Migration Must Know Which Symlinks It Owns

The agentic-coding-toolkit changelog describes a migration from command wrappers to skills. One release removed stale toolkit-owned links while preserving user-managed entries. That sentence is short. The filesystem decision behind it is not. An installer may already have created aliases in several host directories.…

The Moment You Wrap a CLI, stdout Becomes Your Protocol

Choosing a mature command-line tool as an application backend feels like deleting work. No new daemon. No hidden API. No second implementation of the domain. Spawn the executable, collect stdout, put the result in a tree view. Very civilized. Then stdout contains a tab inside user-authored text, an empty field that…

A Rendered Line Is Not Delivered Until write() Completes

My renderer produced the right line. My CLI tried to write it. The output stream rejected it. Then the next state report arrived, the renderer produced the same line again, and the CLI skipped it as a duplicate. Nothing had been duplicated. The line had never made it out. This is the small, unpleasant gap between…

I Chose the Git CLI for a VS Code Extension—Then Had to Own stdout

VS Code already ships with Git support. So when I started Minimal Git Explorer, the sensible shortcut was to ask the built-in Git extension for repository data. I deliberately did not take it. The built-in extension API is internal rather than an officially documented, versioned contract. Minimal Git Explorer instead…

The Last Step Should Stay Boring: Designing AI Commit Tools That Fail Closed

An AI can write a convincing commit message in seconds. That is the easy part. The difficult part begins one millisecond later: what is the tool allowed to do with it? When I designed Commit Quill, a VS Code extension for generating commit messages, the tempting interaction was obvious. Read the diff, call a model,…

Eight Review Findings, One Root Cause: What `merry init` Taught Me About Paths

I shipped a setup command. The reviewer found eight problems with it. Four of them were the same problem. I maintain merry, a small Dart CLI that lets you define script shortcuts in pubspec.yaml and run them with merry build instead of typing the whole command. It's a maintained fork of derry. Nothing exotic. The one…

nvm Keeps Eating My Global Packages: Building node-snapshot to Get Them Back

If you use nvm and you install your CLI tools globally, you have probably lived this moment: you bump Node to the latest patch, open a fresh terminal, type tsc (or eslint, or yarn, or whatever you live inside), and the shell just… shrugs. It was there yesterday. You didn't uninstall anything. But nvm doesn't carry…
