After Editing zsh History, Check the Running Shell Too

You edit a command in the history file, inspect the saved text, and find the old command still listed by the open terminal. Checking the file again will not explain that mismatch: zsh also keeps an in-memory history list. Before trusting a history-editing tool, check what the running shell lists after the edit and…

Git Can Match Nothing and Exit Zero

I ran a Git verification command. It printed nothing. It exited zero. I recorded the two worktrees as converged. Then I ran the same verification again. And again. Three clean results later, I discovered the command had never matched a file. The repository was not clean. The selector was blind. The files lived under…

The Newer Bash Hung. The Fix Was to Stop Generating Shell Code.

I expected the old system Bash to be the suspicious interpreter. This machine produced the opposite result. This time, macOS Bash 3.2 finished the command in about ten milliseconds. Homebrew Bash 5.3.15 did not return before the timeout. The command was not a build, an install, or a network request. It printed a zsh…

My Memory Said the Pipeline Was Gone. Git Said `pipefail` Replaced It.

I went looking for a small shell lesson in my engineering memory. I found a neat one. A Bash script used this shape: The recorded fix said to capture the producer first, check its exit status, and feed the saved output to the loop with a here-string. That is a reasonable fix. It is also exactly what commit f51385a did…

A Sanitized Summary Is Not a Sanitized Workflow

The fallback has more than one possible outcome. One repository can supply contributor statistics through the GitHub API. Another can need a bare clone and git log --numstat. Another can still fail. My workflow needed to say that much without printing a list of repository names into the log. So I gave it one line…

Your Subprocess Timeout Fires On Time and Your Program Still Hangs

I set a 30-second timeout. The run took 120 seconds. The timeout was working perfectly. I write a small Prettier plugin that formats Dart code blocks inside Markdown. It does almost nothing on its own — it hands each block to the dart format binary you already have installed and puts the result back. A thin wrapper…

Fourteen Green Runs and Ten Days of Silence: Your Scheduler Runs a Different Bash

I have a small script that writes a daily journal entry. It reads what changed across my repos, summarizes it, and drops a Markdown file into a folder. Nothing clever. It had passed shellcheck with no warnings and fourteen end-to-end runs on my own machine. It then failed every single day for ten days, and I did not…

nvm Keeps Eating My Global Packages: Building node-snapshot to Get Them Back

If you use nvm and you install your CLI tools globally, you have probably lived this moment: you bump Node to the latest patch, open a fresh terminal, type tsc (or eslint, or yarn, or whatever you live inside), and the shell just… shrugs. It was there yesterday. You didn't uninstall anything. But nvm doesn't carry…
