7 Silent Failures in My Flutter App That No Test Caught

A token refresh that never ran, a crash filter that threw away crashes, and a test that defended a bug On 2026-10-03, four tests for a review screen in the Flutter app I maintain started failing. They couldn't find a snackbar. The snackbar was fine. The real error was this: The app decides whether it's running under…

pnpm 12 Quietly Blinds Your Dependency Scanner (and the Fix Has a Missing Step)

Your lockfile still pins the vulnerable versions, and your scanner still says "No issues found" On 2026-10-04 I was moving a repository I maintain from Yarn Classic to pnpm 12.9.1. Boring work: delete three yarn.lock files, pin "packageManager": "pnpm@12.9.1" in each package.json, regenerate, update the setup docs. By…

Upgrading to Flutter 3.47 Broke 4 Things in My App: The Checklist I Wish I'd Had

Three failed loudly, one failed silently, and one of the loud ones was hiding in generated code On 2026-10-03 I opened my Flutter app under Flutter 3.47.6 stable for the first time. The app had last been built on an older SDK, and the first thing I saw was not a new feature. It was 111 test files that no longer…

A Better Git Flag Broke the Reproduction

The script looked wrong. It searched for gone upstream branches with this pipeline. The reviewer knew that -vv showed upstream information. So they made the command more informative before testing it. It returned no match. That appeared to prove the original detector was broken. It proved something else. The…

Zero Duplicates Was a Regex Dialect Bug

The duplicate query returned zero. That looked like excellent news. Then a second path found 230. The second path changed the boundary escape. The result changed from zero to 230. I had written \b as a word boundary. PostgreSQL read it as backspace. This is the part that makes the bug expensive. \b is not invalid…

My Vulnerability Scanner Remembered Yesterday's Clean Result

A dependency remediation session restored a lockfile that contained vulnerable packages and ran the repository's normal security check. It reported no issues. Dependabot still showed open alerts. A direct OSV scan found three vulnerable packages in the lockfile. The dependencies had traveled backward in time. The…

Your Prompt Cache Reads Zero and Your Prefix Is Fine

Every guide to Anthropic prompt caching tells you the same debugging step, and it is a good one. If cache_read_input_tokens comes back zero across repeated requests with an identical prefix, something in that prefix is changing between calls. A timestamp in the system prompt. A UUID. A dict that serializes in a…

Your Subprocess Timeout Fires On Time and Your Program Still Hangs

I set a 30-second timeout. The run took 120 seconds. The timeout was working perfectly. I write a small Prettier plugin that formats Dart code blocks inside Markdown. It does almost nothing on its own — it hands each block to the dart format binary you already have installed and puts the result back. A thin wrapper…

A Debug Log Is Not Allowed to Run Your Code

Debug logging is supposed to observe a program. That sounds too obvious to deserve a rule. Then put a cursor on prefs in this line and ask a source-editing tool to “log what is under the cursor”: What should it insert? If the tool expands the selection to the widest nearby expression, it may generate this:…

Fourteen Green Runs and Ten Days of Silence: Your Scheduler Runs a Different Bash

I have a small script that writes a daily journal entry. It reads what changed across my repos, summarizes it, and drops a Markdown file into a folder. Nothing clever. It had passed shellcheck with no warnings and fourteen end-to-end runs on my own machine. It then failed every single day for ten days, and I did not…

Your Build Says Fabric. Ask the Runtime.

A green build is a configuration fact. Fabric being live is a runtime fact. They are not the same claim. There is a specific flavour of wasted afternoon where you flip newArchEnabled=true, the build goes green, the app launches, and you spend the next two hours debugging a Fabric-only behaviour in an app that is…
