A Debug Log Is Not Allowed to Run Your Code

Debug logging is supposed to observe a program. That sounds too obvious to deserve a rule. Then put a cursor on prefs in this line and ask a source-editing tool to “log what is under the cursor”: What should it insert? If the tool expands the selection to the widest nearby expression, it may generate this:…

Let Rules Draw the UI: Why Design-to-Code Should Work Before the LLM Arrives

“Turn this Figma frame into code” sounds like the perfect LLM task. The input is visual, the output is code, and there are enough naming decisions in the middle to keep a model pleasantly busy. I chose a less exciting architecture for figma-to-nativewind. The plugin first converts the selected Figma subtree into a…

The Last Step Should Stay Boring: Designing AI Commit Tools That Fail Closed

An AI can write a convincing commit message in seconds. That is the easy part. The difficult part begins one millisecond later: what is the tool allowed to do with it? When I designed Commit Quill, a VS Code extension for generating commit messages, the tempting interaction was obvious. Read the diff, call a model,…

A Prompt Is Not a Policy: Writing an Operating Contract for Coding Agents

Part 1 of “Designing Coding Agents That Earn Write Access.” I used to treat an agent instruction file like a very stern README. Be careful. Keep the diff small. Run the tests. Do not make things up. All perfectly reasonable sentences. Together, they created the comforting appearance of control. Then an agent read…

staticElement Is Gone in analyzer 8.x — Ask the Return Type Instead

If you maintain a custom lint rule for Dart and you have been putting off the analyzer 8.x bump, here is the thing that will stop your build, and the shape of the fix. SimpleIdentifier.staticElement was removed. Not deprecated with a grace period you can ignore for two more releases — removed. Rule code that reaches…

The Rules I Wrote Down Before Touching a Private API

A small project of mine needed data that a company exposes on its own website but not through any documented API. The data was about my listing — a business I run — and it was already visible in a browser to anyone who loaded the page. That combination is the tempting one. It feels like it should be fine. It is your…

Fourteen Green Runs and Ten Days of Silence: Your Scheduler Runs a Different Bash

I have a small script that writes a daily journal entry. It reads what changed across my repos, summarizes it, and drops a Markdown file into a folder. Nothing clever. It had passed shellcheck with no warnings and fourteen end-to-end runs on my own machine. It then failed every single day for ten days, and I did not…

You Don't Choose Your Scraping Strategy — the Platform's API Surface Does

I wanted the same boring thing twice: pull my own chat history out of an AI product and save it as Markdown. Once for Claude, once for Gemini. Same author, same monorepo, same output format, same week. I assumed I'd write one script and copy-paste it with the hostname swapped. I ended up with two scripts that share…

Teaching Your IDE to Show Icons: Inline SVG Previews in Dartdoc Comments

Autocomplete on an icon font is a very specific kind of comedy. You type LucideIcons. and the IDE proudly offers you 2,023 options with names like pencilSparkles, beefOff, and squirrel. Which of these is the icon you saw in the design mock? No idea. Alt-tab to lucide.dev, search, squint, alt-tab back, pick,…

Publishing to pub.dev With Zero Stored Secrets: OIDC and Per-Package Tags for a Federated Flutter Plugin

Every CI publishing pipeline I have ever set up began the same way: generate a long-lived token on the registry website, paste it into the repo's secret store, and promise myself I'd rotate it someday. (Narrator: he did not rotate it.) I've paid for that pattern before. On an earlier npm project, my tag-driven publish…

My AI Code Reviewer Is Only Allowed to Say Two Things

I sit on both sides of AI code review. On one side, I run AI reviewers over pull requests as part of my own tooling. On the other, my repos receive automated reviews from vendor bots — Codex, Copilot — whose comments I then have to triage. Living on the receiving end teaches you something the producing end desperately…

Your React Native App Says ‘New Architecture.’ Your Dependencies May Disagree.

Every React Native migration has a moment where somebody flips a flag, the app still launches, and the room collectively decides that the hard part must be over. This is a lovely moment. It is also a terrible time to stop looking. The New Architecture is not only a setting in your app configuration. It is a contract…
