Anthropic's Scion: What Happens When Writing Code Outruns Moving It?

Imagine asking an agent for a small change, then watching the job spend longer preparing its workspace than doing useful work. Now imagine launching more agents to make things faster. (The checkout step would like a word.) That hypothetical is my starting question for Scion: what are we paying to prepare each unit of…

AI Can Write the Commit Subject. It Cannot Approve the Commit.

A good commit message is small, which is why it is so easy to postpone until the exact moment your brain is tired of the diff. AI can summarize that diff. The dangerous part is everything around the summary: which files are sent, whether unstaged work gets mixed in, whether a lockfile consumes the entire context,…

A Git Explorer That Does Not Need an Account

Sometimes I want to inspect a repository, not join a platform. Show me the recent commits. Let me see local and remote branches, configured remotes, stashes, tags, and worktrees. Open a commit diff when I click it. Do not ask me to create an account, start a trial, or explain my telemetry preferences before showing…

Mergeable Was True for a Different Head

The pull request was reviewed. The checks were green. The mergeability field was clean. Then another commit arrived. If I merge now, which commit am I approving? “The PR” is not precise enough. A review observes a head commit. A merge acts on a head commit. Those two heads must be the same. Current GitHub CLI 2.98.0…

A Better Git Flag Broke the Reproduction

The script looked wrong. It searched for gone upstream branches with this pipeline. The reviewer knew that -vv showed upstream information. So they made the command more informative before testing it. It returned no match. That appeared to prove the original detector was broken. It proved something else. The…

The Staged Diff Is an AI Boundary

An AI commit assistant sees a dirty working tree and has an obvious temptation: read everything, understand everything, and produce the most complete answer it can. That instinct is useful for research. It is unsafe for a commit. The staged diff is not merely a convenient smaller input. It is the developer saying,…

The Moment You Wrap a CLI, stdout Becomes Your Protocol

Choosing a mature command-line tool as an application backend feels like deleting work. No new daemon. No hidden API. No second implementation of the domain. Spawn the executable, collect stdout, put the result in a tree view. Very civilized. Then stdout contains a tab inside user-authored text, an empty field that…

    Generated Artifacts Can Be Canonical

“Do not commit generated files” is one of those rules that becomes true before anyone finishes saying it. Usually, it is right. Build output is reproducible. It is noisy in diffs. It invites merge conflicts. It makes a repository look like someone spilled a dist/ directory on the floor and quietly walked away. Then a…

Git Can Match Nothing and Exit Zero

I ran a Git verification command. It printed nothing. It exited zero. I recorded the two worktrees as converged. Then I ran the same verification again. And again. Three clean results later, I discovered the command had never matched a file. The repository was not clean. The selector was blind. The files lived under…

My Memory Said the Pipeline Was Gone. Git Said `pipefail` Replaced It.

I went looking for a small shell lesson in my engineering memory. I found a neat one. A Bash script used this shape: The recorded fix said to capture the producer first, check its exit status, and feed the saved output to the loop with a here-string. That is a reasonable fix. It is also exactly what commit f51385a did…

I Chose the Git CLI for a VS Code Extension—Then Had to Own stdout

VS Code already ships with Git support. So when I started Minimal Git Explorer, the sensible shortcut was to ask the built-in Git extension for repository data. I deliberately did not take it. The built-in extension API is internal rather than an officially documented, versioned contract. Minimal Git Explorer instead…

The Last Step Should Stay Boring: Designing AI Commit Tools That Fail Closed

An AI can write a convincing commit message in seconds. That is the easy part. The difficult part begins one millisecond later: what is the tool allowed to do with it? When I designed Commit Quill, a VS Code extension for generating commit messages, the tempting interaction was obvious. Read the diff, call a model,…
